| Hallamshire was in the south west corner of the old West Riding of Yorkshire (now South Yorkshire), central North England. In 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy invaded England, the manor of Hallam was owned by Waltheof, the Anglo-Saxon Earl of Northumberland. The Domesday Book (1086), makes reference to Waltheof having a hall ( Aula) in the village of Hallam. The first mention of Hallam (Hulum/Hallun) was in a pre-Norman Charter of 958. The exact site around Sheffield is not known, but there is still a district of Hallam to the South West of Sheffield, which has its own Member of Parliament. In 1069 everything in the area was destroyed by William the Conqueror. In Anglo-Saxon times, Sheffield was the capital of Hallamshire. A lot of places, and businesses in Sheffield use Hallam or Hallamshire in their name. There is the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Radio Hallam etc. Hallamshire Music was started by Derek and Brenda Ashmore in 1975. Both were born and lived in Sheffield until 1986, then moving to the flatlands of Lincolnshire. | |
